CASE Shetland worked closely with Ocean Kinetics to deliver their state-of-the-art Non-Destructive Testing Facility, which is the only commercial service of its kind here in Shetland. We undertook a range of professional design services, from the initial concept, navigating the complex Planning Phase and ultimately through to completion on site.
The nature of the testing to be undertaken meant that the facility had to be housed in a structure akin to a nuclear bunker, with thick reinforced concrete walls and roof. The overall layout had to be carefully considered to maximise operational floor area whilst providing ‘safe spaces’ for the operatives.
At the official opening of the facility, Ocean Kinetics Managing Director, John Henderson said:
“Ocean Kinetics has long specialised in marine works, metal works and fabrication, welding, pipework, repair and corrosion prevention, project management and design, and we recognised that there was a real need for radiographic inspection facilities in Shetland. We have therefore invested in an innovative service that will reduce fabrication lead times, minimise handling costs and offer an attractive service to a range of clients.
The facility, housed in a fully refurbished building opposite our main premises at Port Business Park in Lerwick, includes a radiation exposure bay with vehicle access and overhead crane, a hydrostatic pressure testing facilities with CCTV surveillance, a fully equipped darkroom, ultrasonic inspection facilities, and SPX hydraulic bolting and calibration equipment.
We have been delighted by the interest in the facility to date, and have already undertaken radiography and pressure testing of pipework for both EnQuest and Total… we very much hope that we can go on to help a range of clients meet their particular inspection requirements.”
This project typified the broad nature of work which we undertake here at CASE Shetland. As an island group we have a long history of adaptability and innovation, necessitated in part by our remote geographical location. We are keen to continue this tradition by offering a comprehensive range of services and by generally adopting a ‘can do’ attitude to new opportunities. It is an approach which has served us well thus far.
