With an enviable view to the Isle of Mousa and traditional Croft house charm, the client wanted to make the most of these attributes whilst creating a light filled, efficient space, flexible enough for both working and relaxing in.

This was an opportunity to both create additional floor space via a front extension whilst also taking the opportunity to update the exterior of the building, by cladding the roadside elevations with untreated larch.

The Planning Application, prepared by a family friend, proposed an open and inviting addition to the home, including a second bathroom.  CASE Shetland took over the project once Planning Approval had been granted, working closely with the Client to deliver the home improvements which they craved.

The COVID-19 pandemic engulfed the world in early 2020, with ramifications with rippled outwards into even the most remote communities.  In an unfortunate timing, the Building Warrant for this project was Approved in April of that year, meaning that the actual construction work would have to undertaken against a backdrop of uncertainty, repeated Lock Downs and rapidly increasing material costs.  As the world tried to adjust to the ‘new normal’, the requirement for home offices and flexible working solutions grew exponentially.  This project was no different: if anything, the need for more space became more acute.

Thankfully the Client managed to secure a Building Contractor, who delivered a beautifully crafted extension amidst the chaos.  The large glazed opening on the gable end perfectly captures the views across to Mousa, offering a tangible connection to nature and the world outside.  The picturesque vista is equally as beautiful on a warm summer afternoon as it is stunning during a harsh winter gale.  It is a seascape which is constantly changing and ever engaging.

The bones of the proposal had been formed during the Pre-Planning stage, but CASE Shetland were able to make our stamp on the extension during the detailed design work.  For example, we pushed the Client to incorporate Velux Rooflights, which would flood the space with natural light from above.  They were sceptical at first, and took some convincing that the addition cost would be worthwhile…

Fast-forward to the build on site, and as the roof was sheeted in with OSB they quickly realised that this had been a hugely positive addition.  They were delighted with the results.  Now, as the sun moves through the sky each day two shafts of light work their way across the room, casting interesting shadows and diffused reflections.  The rooflights also significantly increase the sense of space and volume, making the vaulted ceiling worthwhile.

It was a pleasure working with them, and we were thankful that they trusted our architectural judgement and fully embraced the design process.
